UK OPERA ASSOCIATION

The UK Opera Association is a representative body for the opera sector. UKOA will act as the collective voice for opera in the UK, advocating for the sector, championing artistic excellence and innovation, and promoting opera’s significant contribution to national life - from enriching communities and cultural identity to supporting economic growth and developing creative and technical skills.

Our vision is for a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable opera sector that works together and , shares knowledge. By uniting the sector, UKOA aims to ensure opera continues to evolve, reach wider audiences, and play a meaningful role in the UK’s cultural and economic landscape.

Whilst we build the website, we have included answers to frequently asked questions below. In the meantime please sign up to the UKOA newsletter to hear updates on our progress.

FAQs

Why do we need a representative body for the opera sector?

A representative body for the UK opera sector will:

  • Help the opera sector collaborate more effectively across a variety of different areas.
  • Support the sector to face challenges collectively and share examples of best practice.
  • Be a strong and positive advocate for the importance and power of opera as an artform to sector bodies, such as the Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Arts Council of Wales and to government.
  • Celebrate opera’s contribution to the UK’s cultural and economic life by enriching communities and developing creative and technical skills and occupations.
  • Promote diversity, accessibility and sustainability across the sector.

Haven’t we tried to do this before?

There have been a few previous organisations set up to bring the opera sector together, including the Opera and Music Theatre Forum (OMTF), launched in 1992, and Opera UK, launched in 2020. People involved in a leadership level in both of these organisations have been part of our conversations so far, and we intend that any new organisation will build upon the work and learnings of what has been done before.

Who has been involved so far and what has been decided?

In March 2024, a group of opera companies held a meeting following the publication of the Arts Council’s Opera and Music Theatre Analysis – the vast majority of these companies were those who had participated in interviews as part of the Arts Council’s report, and decided to meet so that we could think, together, about our response to the analysis.

The idea to form a representative body emerged - to formalise and democratise the conversations that we were having.

We undertook some initial scoping work with a paid consultancy company (People Make It Work) to explore what the options might be. This work culminated in March 2025, with a draft outline for what a membership organisation could look like, what its purpose and values might be, and what level of income and expenditure it might need to be effective.

In June 2025 the ideas were shared more widely with the sector and feedback was received.

Who would the members of this organisation be?

UKOA membership is open to opera companies and organisations across the UK, with fees set in proportion to turnover.

This will not preclude the organisation of events and activities that would be open to everyone, member or not.

How is this being funded?

The founding companies of UKOA are grateful to Arts Council England for a grant of £25,000 towards set up and initial running costs, before membership fees become payable in early 2026.

What happens now?

With an interim board to guide the organisation through to autumn 2026 and the appointment of the leadership team in October 2025, the UK Opera Association will now begin to define its scope, reach, and strategy.
